Introduction: Stroke belongs to those diseases in which treatment process is dependent on the patients’ evaluation of the quality of life.

Aim: We examined the patients’ quality of life in first month after stroke. The impact of selected determinants (age, sex, type of stroke, proactive coping strategies) was assessed.

Methods: A total of 60 patients with medical diagnosis stroke, of which 33 were men were assessed. The average age of respondents was 63.78 (SD = 11.25). The questionnaire SF 36 assessing quality of life and PCI – Proactive Coping Inventory assessing proactive coping strategies were used for data collection. Results: The lowest score in the evaluation of quality of life was found in the Health domain change. We found that the age of the patient was related to the quality of life of patients after a stroke. Gender and type of stroke showed differences in the evaluation of individual domains of quality of life. The level of quality of life is also affected by various proactive coping strategies.

Conclusion: The knowledge of determinants of quality of life is important in the process of nursing diagnosis. The nurse can assist in early detection of lower quality of life, and subsequently can arrange care planning for its improvement.

Keywords: quality of life, stroke, gender, age, proactive coping
