Aim: The aim of descriptive cross-sectional study was to determine the quality of life and quality of work life among hospital nurses, and to investigate the factors which have an impact on their quality of life.
Methods: The sample consisted of 188 nurses working in regional hospital Moravian-Silesian Region with a minimum one year of nursing practice. Data were collected in June-July 2013 with using two instruments: Personal Well-being Index-Adult and Professional Quality of Life Scale.
Results: Nurses in the outpatient wards were more satisfied than nurses in the inpatient wards. Most nurses are moderately satisfied with their work. The quality of working life doesn’t change depending on where the nurse works. It was also found that 65 % of nurses are at moderate risk of risk of secondary traumatic stress. It was confirmed that sociodemographic factors (age, education, specialization, marital status, employment, the length of nursing practice and practice at the current workplace) affect the quality of life and the quality of working life.
Conclusion: The majority of nurses were slightly above average level of quality of working life, moderate risk of secondary traumatic stress and burnout. These findings should motivate hospital management to improve the working conditions of nurses who work significantly affect the overall quality of life of nurses.
