Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the incidence of patient's aggression against nurses, job satisfaction and intention of nurses to leave the actual workplace and nursing profession.

Methods: A survey was undertaken among 62 nurses from internal and surgical wards of public hospital in Salzburg. Nurses were recruited between February and March 2014. In this survey, three questionnaires were used to measure experience in the prevalence of aggression (V scale), job satisfaction (the McCloskey/Mueller Satisfaction Scale) and nurses leaving intentions. For determining the associations between variables, the multiple regression analyses were used.

Results: The significant negative relationship (r = -0,306; p = 0,016) was confirmed between overall job satisfaction of nurses and physical aggression with no use of offensive weapon. Physical aggression with no use of offensive weapon explained low percentage of the variance (8%) in job satisfaction. Significant correlations were not noted between the incidence of patients' aggression against nurses and intention of nurses to leave the actual workplace and nursing profession.

Conclusion: Perceptions of frequency of patient aggression were not confirmed as the significant predictors of nurses' job satisfaction and intentions to leave the actual worpplace and nursing profession.

Keywords: job satisfaction, patient aggression, nursing
