Aim: The aim of the study was to determine nurses´ knowledge of pain in the elderly at selected wards in the Slovakia and Czech Republic.
Methods: The cross-sectional study to determine nurses´ knowledge of pain in elderly was used. The Pain in the Elderly Questionnaire for data collection was used. The research group consisted of 160 nurses, 94 nurses from Slovakia and 66 nurses from the Czech Republic.
Results: The research study showed differences between nurses´ knowledge of pain in the elderly in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The average percentage of correct answers in the Pain in the Elderly Questionnaire was 44.95% in the Slovak sample, 48.05% in Czech nurses sample. Statistically significant differences were found in rating of four items when comparing the evaluation of items rated by Slovak and Czech nurses with non-university education. Statistically significant differences were found in rating of three items when comparing the evaluation items for university education. Another statistically significant differences were found when comparing rating of items by Slovak and Czech nurses with 10 years of clinical experience for 2 items for length of service of over 10 years with 4 items.
Conclusions: Study results indicate that nurses lacked knowledge on pain in elderly. The level of knowledge differs depending on education and clinical experiences.
