Spiritual needs of seniors in institutional care

Aim: The aim of the research was to determine the importance and filling of spiritual needs of seniors in institutional care. Furthermore, notice the difference in the importance of fullness and spiritual needs based on age, religion, attendance of children, length of stay in the institution and self activities and independence of respondents.

Methodology: Spiritual needs were assessed using a questionaire which values the importance of variety and fullness needs. The questionnaire contained a total of 25 items grouped into 7 domains. To assess of self independece was used Barthel test. Research was attended by 150 seniors from 6 homes for seniors in Ostrava.

Results: Seniors frequently considered important spiritual needs without regard to religious belief, namely: to be in nature and appreciate its beauty (95 %), to give and receive love (90 %), to be filled with peace (90 %), be thankful (87 %), experience and appreciate the music (88 %), to observe moral principles (85 %) and have ensured dignified care (84 %). Significantly for more important was considered the spiritual needs of seniors which to be of religious faith, they were also more satisfied with the saturation of these needs. Seniors who have not frequented visits of their children have reported unmet needs in the domain Meaning of life.

Conclusion: Spiritual needs are not only the needs of the faithful people, but are a matter for each of us. Proper recognition of spiritual needs and assist in their implementation is an essential part of a holistic view of nursing.
