Nursing diagnostics in the elderly

Background: The aim of the nursing diagnosis is to draw conclusions on the specific needs of the individual and to plan effective care (Doenges, Moorhouse, 2003, pp. 37-38). Due to demographic changes, is the actual to use of nursing diagnosis in the elderly.

Objective: Find the nursing diagnoses in NANDA International 2012-2014 classification system, according to the related or risk factors associated to elderly and find out what are the most frequent published nursing diagnoses in the elderly.

Methods: Detailed analysis of all NANDA International 2012-2014 nursing diagnoses and search for related factors and risk factors that are associated to elderly was performed. For find published nursing diagnoses were used these electronic databases - PubMed, ProQuest, Springer, Wiley Online Library, BiblioMedica and Google search engine. After detailed analysis, 8 found a scientific article has been used for final processing.

Results: 17 nursing diagnoses according NANDA International 2012-2014, that can be identified in the elderly according the related or risk factors was found. In the finding publications were together identified 17 mostly used nursing diagnoses in the elderly. The nursing diagnoses that were set in the elderly in the institutional and home care were found.

Conclusion: The use of a single classification system would contribute to more effective monitoring of nursing problems in the context of nursing care in the elderly. NANDA International classification system seems as appropriate.
