Aim: The McCloskey/Mueller Satisfaction Scale is one instrument commonly used to measure nurse job satisfaction among nurses. The purpose of this paper is to describe the psychometric properties of the Slovak version of this instrument. We compared the factor structure of instrument with the original version (Mueller, McCloskey, 1990) as well as with the revised version (Tourangeau et al., 2006).

Methods: Data from a survey of 556 nurses from twenty eight hospitals were used to establish psychometric properties of the Slovak version. Dimensionality was tested using confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses. Reliability coefficients of the new factors and construct validity of Slovak version are reported.

Results: Exploratory factor analysis revealed a six-factor model with following subscales – satisfaction with social relationships and interactions; satisfaction with support from supervisor; satisfaction with scholarly and cooperation opportunities; satisfaction with scheduling; satisfaction with extrinsic rewards and satisfaction with balance of family and work. We excluded thirteen items from the original scale.

Conclusions: The Slovak version is conceptually consistent with original version (Mueller, McCloskey, 1990); has good construct validity. We identified low internal consistency in three subscales.

Keywords: McCloskey/Mueller Satisfaction Scale, Slovak version, job satisfaction of nurses, validation, factor analysis, reliability
