Aim: The objective of the research is to identify problems in parents of hearing-impaired children and to reflect the recommended interventions in the relevant researches published up today. It is the identification of key problems of parents of a handicapped child and their needs that enables an adequate aiming of psycho-social support and possible intervention from the side of healthcare staff. It is because the agent of communication with the medical staff is the parents of these children in the stage of diagnosing as well as rehabilitation and compensation of hearing impairment. Adequate care for a hearing-impaired child is nearly impossible without their participation.

Method: The basic framework of the presented research is evidence-based nursing. The chosen technique is quantitative content analysis. The core sample consisted of 280 articles. This sample was formed on the basis of an assigned search of key words. On the basis of the elimination criteria, most of them were rejected. Thirty nine articles fulfilled the set criteria and were analysed. The set criteria were fulfilled only by these 39 articles of the entire sample.

Results: Parents’ feelings were examined in fact to a minimal extent and only superficially. Most studies dealt with problems in communication with the children and preconditions for their development after the implantation of a cochlear implant. Only two studies focused on the parents’ need in a complex way. The most frequently presumed problems and the parents’ needs rooted in them were: the need for information, problems in family life, stress, family and emotional support.

Conclusions: Interventions should be focused especially on providing of quality and relevant information, namely of the diagnosis and all the related problems, possible ways of care for hearing-impaired children, the compensation of hearing impairment, including cochlear implantation and the subsequent rehabilitation etc. However, any intervention has to be based on the identification of needs, in this case the needs of parents of severely hearing-impaired children. An inseparable part of all the interventions should be providing of support.

Keywords: needs, deafness, parenthood, intervention, evidence based nursing
