Education in Prevention of Diabetic Foot Ulcer and Amputation

Abstract

Introduction: Despite the recommendations, education on prevention of diabetic ulcers and amputation is not a standard part of education of diabetics. One reason is the lack of evidence providing the effectiveness of education in the prevention of diabetic ulcers and amputations.

The aim of the study was an educational assessment to identify barriers and preconditions for rational action diabetics to prevention of diabetic ulcers and amputations, before and 6 months after education.

Methodology: The research had an experimental character of the intervention studies (uncontrolled). In diabetic patients, enrolled in the study was carried out educational assessment, using methods of interview and physical examination and were educated. After 6 months, we surveyed the effectiveness of education using a questionaire.

Results and discusion: We have confirmed statistically significant relationships when comparing patients without and with diabetic foot syndrome. Patients without diabetic foot syndrome had a wider range of knowledge, a lower degree of dependence caused by physical limits, as well as fewer problems with their feet prior education. The gender were statistically significant relationships confirmed in favor of women, which had a better level of knowledge and practice of preventive measures and foot care before and after the education. For all respondents to enhance motivation.

Conclusion: Educational assessment of diabetics will ensure that the education of targeted, to respect the barriers and opportunities for learning, enhance the motivation to achieve and change the behavior and actions of diabetics in the prevention of diabetic ulcers and amputations.
